2. Design: A starter consists of a small cylindrical or rectangular casing with electrical contacts inside. It contains a small piece of bimetallic strip, a small amount of gas, and a small amount of neon gas.
3. Operation: When the light switch is turned on, the electrical current flows through the starter. The bimetallic strip inside heats up and bends, causing the contacts to separate. This interrupts the flow of current momentarily, creating a voltage spike.
4. Ionization: The voltage spike ionizes the gas inside the tube, making it conductive. This allows the current to flow through the tube, which then begins to produce light.
5. Self-Healing: Once the current flows through the tube and it begins to emit light, the starter’s bimetallic strip cools down and returns to its original position. The contacts close again, allowing the current to flow normally through the tube. The starter essentially “self-heals” and is ready for the next startup cycle.

It’s worth noting that in modern fluorescent lighting systems, starters are becoming less common. Many newer fluorescent fixtures use electronic ballasts or integrated starters that perform the same function but are more efficient and reliable.
