Booster jumper cables are essential emergency tools to have in your vehicle in case of a dead battery. Proper use and handling of jumper cables are important to avoid injury and damage to the vehicles’ electrical systems.
- Position the vehicles close enough for the jumper cables to reach both batteries but not touch each other.
- Turn off both vehicles’ engines and engage the parking brakes.
- Connect the red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.
- Connect the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the working battery.
- Connect the black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the working battery.
- Finally, connect the black clamp to a bare metal surface or unpainted metal part of the vehicle with the dead battery, away from the battery and any fuel lines.
- Start the engine of the vehicle with the working battery and let it run for a few minutes.
- Attempt to start the engine of the vehicle with the dead battery. If it starts successfully, disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order of connection.
